A Rhodesian Coming Of Age Novel Set in the late 1960's -- 1970's, Tsitsi Dangarembga's 1988 novel "Nervous Conditions" (1988) tells the story of an adolescent girl growing up in rural Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). The author is a Zimbabwe native who earned a medical degree and lived in Germany and England before returning to her native country. Nervous Conditions is a novel by Zimbabwean author Tsitsi Dangarembga, first published in the United Kingdom in 1988. It was the first book published by a black woman from Zimbabwe in English. [1] Nervous Conditions won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize in 1989, [1] and in 2018 was listed as one of the BBC 's top 100 books that changed the world.
Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga is considered fictional but in fact is based on the author’s own life growing up in the then-called Rhodesia, Originally published in 1988, the book concentrates on the challenges faced by women in a country where they are far from equal to their male counterparts. Neither does Dangarembga write as if she has a western audience in mind, as pointed out by Kwame Anthony Appiah in his foreword. Localised terminology isn’t necessarily explained and the author doesn’t go out of her way to appease the European conscience. Nevertheless ‘Nervous Conditions’ has universal appeal.
